After a three-night stay, Edward Cardinal Egan was released Tuesday from St. Vincent's Hospital, but it's still unclear if he'll be able to take part in any Holy Week activities.

A spokesman for the New York Archdiocese says Egan was discharged at 2:30 this afternoon, and returned to his residence behind St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The spokesman says the cardinal's stomach pains have eased, and his doctors felt he should return home to rest and recuperate.

Decisions will be made on a day-to-day basis as far as what Holy Week activities he will take part in.

Doctors also still need to determine when the 77-year-old will have a pacemaker implanted.

Egan, who checked in to St. Vincent's on Saturday with stomach pains, is being succeeded by Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan, whose installation is set for next week.

The Archdiocese says the installation will go on as planned even if the cardinal is not well enough to attend.
