More than 50 people gathered in Washington Heights today to protest Albany's plan to rescue the Metropolitan Transportation Authority with a new payroll tax and tolls on the Harlem and East River bridges.

City and state lawmakers are coming out against the plan, which, among other things, calls for tolls on the city-owned East River and Harlem River bridges.

Opponents say bridge tolls are not an option, and they're demanding the MTA go back to the drawing board.

Among the opponents are the so-called "gang of three." Senators Carl Kruger, Ruben Diaz Senior and Pedro Espada Jr. were part of a group that held out support for Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith.

With Senate Democrats holding a razor-thin majority, the loss of three votes would mean some Republican votes would be needed to get any plan passed.

The MTA says it will move forward with plans to raise fares and cut service unless Albany acts by March 25.
