The Broadway community joined forces Monday night in a show of support for same-sex marriage.
The special performance, held at Midtown’s Gershwin Theatre, was called "Defying Inequality."
Actors Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce and company opened the show with "Prop 8 - The Musical," a theatrical skit about the recent passing of Proposition 8 in California, which limited valid marriages in the state to heterosexual couples.
Marc Shaiman, the co-lyricist of "Hairspray," created "Prop 8" and was present to accompany the cast onstage.
"We're preaching to the choir here tonight, really, but it feels good. Because sometimes you have to fire up the choir so everyone keeps singing at the top of their lungs,” says Shaiman. “But the real challenge is to change people's perceptions, change people's minds and open up their hearts to the fact that God made us just as we are and God doesn't make mistakes."
"Defying Inequality" raised $400,000 for various organizations that are fighting to make same-sex marriages legal.
