Residents of Starrett City heard from the developers looking to buy their homes Monday night.

Tenants as well as the general public took part in a hearing where they got a chance to interview representatives from the four conglomerates interested in purchasing the giant Brooklyn housing complex.

Among those on hand were officials from the Greater Allen Development Corporation and the New York City Central Labor Council.

Residents say they want the new owner to not only keep rents affordable, but also to keep things the way they are.

"We don't want them to come in and say, you know, we're going to get rid of your maintenance, we're going to get rid of your security," said tenant Linda Tilton. "We want to be able to keep what we have."

"We just hope that the new owners will try to follow the same rules and keep as happy tenants," added tenant Bernice Carson.

"We want to reassure the tenants that we are not here to change their neighborhood," said Ed Ott of the Central Labor Council. "We're here to try and preserve it. We not coming in with a big radical plan to overhaul."

There are 5,900 hundred apartments in Starrett City, making it the nation's largest federally-subsidized housing development.

The entire complex could fetch up to $1 billion. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
