The number of city schools deemed dangerous by the state is shrinking, but those from the five boroughs still dominate the list.

Of the 19 schools named "persistently dangerous" as outlined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act, 16 are in the city.

Schools make the list if they have two successive years of serious incidents, such as homicides, sexual offenses or other violent crimes.

The Department of Education says it is happy the overall numbers have dropped, but more work needs to be done.

"This is further indication that we have fewer dangerous schools. The number came down significantly," said Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. "By the same token we have a lot more work to do. Every kid and every family in the city is entitled to a safe school."

Parents whose children attend schools on the list are given the option to have their child transferred.

The 16 city schools that made the list are as follows:
