With the 50th Anniversary of the mega-hit "The Twist" fast approaching, legendary pop culture icon Chubby Checker was in the Big Apple performing at J & R Music World Tuesday.
"'The Twist' is everywhere. Every company's got something called 'The Twist,’” said Checker. “Twist this, twist that, Pepsi Twist, Tropicana Twist, are you kidding? It's out here. They're making a fortune on it!"
Chubby was promoting his new CD set, "All the Best,” and his new single, "Knock Down the Walls.”
Chubby told us "Knock Down the Walls" had divine inspiration.
"From God. If you listen to it, God's talkin'. If you're a goody-two shoe then, 'Knock Down the Walls,’ you should go buy that,” said Checker. “If you're not a good goody-two shoe and you want to be a good one, you should be wanting to buy that to get some instruction."
How did he get the name, Chubby Checker?
"Tony Anastasi gave me the name, Chubby, and then I was doing something for Dick Clark, I think, when I was about 17 and his wife said, ‘Chubby is like Fats’ and ‘Checker,’ which she added on, ‘is like Domino.’ So Chubby became Checker and Mrs. Dick Clark put the Checker on the Chubby and I became Chubby Checker."
After almost 50 years in the music business, Chubby's still dancing.
