Governor Eliot Spitzer announced a plan today to open up the state's food stamp program to more families.
Spitzer says current regulations are too restrictive, keeping many New Yorkers from the help they need.
He says the state will throw out a policy that cuts off food stamps if an otherwise eligible person has too much money in savings. Also gone are the fingerprint identification requirements for working families living outside of the city.
The state is also launching a program in May that will allow applicants to sign up for food stamps online through the help of community based organizations.
More than 1.8 people in the state use food stamps.
