While the mayor is pushing his PlaNYC to make the city environmentally friendly, the city Parks Department is working on a record number of projects.

The department is putting $3 billion in capital funds into a slew of new park projects. Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe says that's the largest amount of city tax dollars ever put into the parks.

The Parks Department currently has 150 active construction projects, and over 200 projects in the making, from planting a million new trees to building new ice rinks.

In the last seven years, the department has hired a thousand new workers and is planning to add dozens more experts to help oversee new park development.

Benepe says most of the capital projects are set to be finished within three years.
