Two officers were injured in the line of duty Tuesday night after they confronted a suspect on a Brooklyn subway platform.
It happened around 11 p.m. at the Broadway Junction subway station in East New York.
Police say two uniformed transit officers were giving 22-year-old Hugo Hernandez a summons for smoking when he slashed Officer Angel Cruz across the head with a 6-inch knife. Cruz then fired at the suspect five times, striking him three times.
Another officer broke his arm responding to the scene.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says this incident, coupled with another violent incident against police officers in Manhattan last night, are reminders of the dangers city police officers face.
"I just think it's another example of the kinds of risks men and women in our Police Department endure every day,” he said. “They want to go home to their families."
Hernandez was taken to Brookdale Hospital in serious but stable condition. He has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon.
Both officers were hospitalized.
