Two men are recovering from serious burns after an explosion Friday evening in the Bronx apartment they were renovating.

The men were putting polyurethane on the floor at 2180 Holland Avenue when something sparked the explosion and sent people in the building running for safety, said the fire department.

"Everything was black and smoky and gray and I yelled out for my kids,” said a woman who lives in the apartment building. “I opened the door and I see the two men and they were on fire and my kids were screaming because the men were on fire."

"A lot of smoke, a lot of panicking people, they didn't know what to do,” added a woman who was visiting her friends apartment at the time of the explosion. “There were elderly folks. Also this is my friend, I checked out her apartment and the ceiling has collapsed in three different rooms and it was really horrible."

Both men suffered severe burns to their faces and were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where they are listed in serious condition. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
