Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is introducing legislation to promote stem cell research in New York State.

Silver wants to create a non-profit organization that would fund and support the controversial research. The proposed the New York Institute for Stem Cell Research would be an important tool for scientists, he said, adding that New York can't afford to let the benefits of stem cell research pass by.

“We must use the powers of our great minds and our facilities to end the suffering of our loved ones and to prevent the suffering of future generations,” Silver said Tuesday.

The proposal is supported by the health committee chairman and other members of the state Assembly. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
