A medical student who went above and beyond the call of duty is NY1's latest New Yorker of the week. NY1's Rita Nissan introduces us to a man who risked his own life to save a family from a fire in Queens.

He is new to the city but to a group of Queens residents, he is the ultimate New Yorker.

On Labor Day, after a 24-hour shift at Queens Hospital Center, Medical student Thomas Bui was walking to the house he moved into in Briarwood just last month, when he heard a woman shout from a house three doors from his.

Hearing cries of fire, Bui ran into the burning house — not once, but three times. He brought out the baby, then a child and finally jumped from a balcony with the woman he had first heard screaming for help.

And Bui cannot really explain why he did it.

"A lot of people ask me what was I thinking anything at the time, I don't remember thinking anything at the time. I just reacted," said Bui.

His reaction doesn't surprise the people he works with. They say that's just the kind of person he is.

"Honestly, I am not surprised 'cause he is an amazing person," said Bui's supervisor Dr. Tod Rothschild.

Bui says the courage and strength to do what he did comes from the people around him, especially the people at Queens Hospital Center.

"Really the good influences I've had throughout my life, here at Queens Hospital," said Bui. I don't really consider myself a hero; the heroes are the people in the OB-GYN department."

And when his supervisors were asked about his future as a doctor they said.

"Oh, he will be a fantastic doctor, absolutely fantastic," said Dr. Lise Rehwaldt, the director of the OB-GYN department at Queens Hospital. "I think just his selflessness that he exhibited just over the weekend is a true example of just how he will go forward and always thinking about other people before himself."

Something the family he saved on 87th Road learned first-hand.

"He's an excellent New Yorker; he's a hero New Yorker" said Maribel Hernandez, who was saved by Bui.

So for risking his own life to save the lives of others, Thomas Bui is our New Yorker of the Week.
