The corner of 48th Street and Seventh Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, was renamed Saturday for Firefighter David DeRubbio, one of the fallen heroes of 9/11.

“My brother was born and raised here,” said his brother, Dominick DeRubbio, who is also a firefighter. “We all lived here, we played here, we went to school at St. Agatha's. So this is the spot.”

DeRubbio was working with Engine 226 in Boreum Hill when he responded to the World Trade Center attack. He joined the department three years earlier, following in the footsteps of three of his brothers.

While the ceremony was solemn and sad, there were also fond remembrances of DeRubbio and the neighborhood he grew up in.

“This was not a place for a young girl to hang out,” said his sister Angela, “so he was always chasing me off the corner. So there are a lot of memories here.”

DeRubbio's fellow firefighters from Engine 226 say the tribute shows the neighborhood hasn't forgotten the sacrifices of 9/11.

“People still understand what these guys did, giving their lives like they did,” said firefighter Jack Halaby.

“Younger kids, through the years, will get to know Dave, and always remember the sacrifice that he made and what a big part he was of this neighborhood,” said Pete Culkin, another member of Engine 226.

DeRubbio's family says he was a jokester, and back in the day, the street sign may not have been around too long.

“I could see him going up there with a wrench and maybe taking it off and maybe hanging it in his room,” said Dominick.

But for now, it stays on the corner of 48th and Seventh, along with the memories of a hero who grew up right down the block.
