For the first time, the city will not oversee the September 11th ceremony.
Instead, it will be run by the September 11th Foundation, whose chairman is former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The change has been in the works for a while.
A spokesman for the National September 11th Memorial and Museum said the transition began in 2012.
Mayor Bill de Blasio's office said the city agrees with the decision, saying that it will "ensure the ceremony runs smoothly".
