Some top officers in the New York City Police Department are being schooled in the proper use of Twitter.
The department has assigned precinct commanders to take a course in social media at John Jay College aimed at preventing inappropriate tweets.
The move follows some recent online mistakes, including a tweet sent out by one NYPD captain where he joked about the death of a woman who fell on the subway tracks.
Officers are being told to avoid off-the-cuff comments on Twitter while using the service to send out wanted posters and crime data.
They are also being told not to tweet out any information about crime scenes or police investigations.
