The preliminary report from the medical examiner says a 14-month-old baby in Queens died from of natural causes Friday after being brought home from day care.
"When they took the baby to the day care she was healthy. She was fine," said Edward Orjiogo, a friend of the family.
Orjiogo says when the father of 14-month-old Daniella Okoye picked her up from day care on Friday she appeared to be sleeping in her car seat.
"Normally, when he comes to pick her up she always runs to him. This was the first time she was sleeping. She was in the car seat sleeping," Orjiogo says.
He says the father knew something was wrong during the drive home.
"Now that they drove a little bit, she should have woken up by now," Orjiogo says.
Police say officers responded to a call from the family home at about 6:30 p.m.
The child was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
Her cause of death has not been released by the medical examiner and officials have not said when they believe Daniella took her final breath.
"The parents are my family members and my friends. The baby is a very nice baby. I think I saw the baby one week ago. She was sound and healthy, very well, but what happened to her is what we are still, you know, are surprised about," Orjiogo says.
Police were seen here Saturday at the family's brick home in Brookville but gave no indication where the investigation is leading.
Friends came to visit throughout the day Saturday to remember Daniella.
"If he was washing his car, he would have her either on the steps in the car seat or outside with him," neighbor Layton Campbell says.
The city's Administration for Children's Services is also investigating.
