A Brooklyn based boat building program is helping kids sail into their futures.

Called Brooklyn Boat Works, the program aims to teach kids life skills, where they learn to work with their hands as they turn pieces of plywood into a seaworthy vessels.

The kids then get to test them out, launching them off the recently opened beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

"Through the building process we focus on things like makership, concentration, they show up every week for sometimes a full school year to come and participate in the program," said Brooklyn Boatworks Co-Founder Carl Persak.

"Boat programs was always something people wanted to see out here on the East River and this morning were making it happen," said Brooklyn Bridge ark President Regina Myer.
