Brooklyn-born comedian Joan Rivers is said to be in critical but stable condition.

Her daughter Melissa Rivers released a statement last night that said, "I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Sources tell the Associated Press that the 81-year-old comedian went into into cardiac arrest.

NY1 spoke with some of her fans outside the hospital who are hoping for a speedy recovery.

"I love Joan Rivers. I'm a fan of hers, and I think she's a great lady," said one fan. "She's a great lady. She's a comedian legend."

"I'm very concerned because she is a very wonderful woman, very funny, and it's sad to hear, but we just wish her well," said a third.

Published reports indicate she stopped breathing while undergoing a vocal cord procedure.

The New York City Fire Department says they responded to a call at Yorkville Endoscopy and took a patient who was undergoing cardiac or respiratory arrest to Mt. Sinai Hospital, but they would not say if that patient was Rivers.
