The man who killed John Lennon was denied parole for the eighth time on Friday, New York State corrections officials confirm.

Mark David Chapman, 59, is serving 20 years to life in an upstate prison for shooting the iconic former Beatle outside Lennon's apartment on the Upper West Side in 1980.

The parole board says his release would be "incompatible with the welfare of society" and that Lennon's murder "devastated a family and those who loved the victim."

He is eligible for parole again in two years.
