As preparations continue for Saturday's march in honor of Eric Garner, a rally was held on Staten Island in support of the NYPD.
Hundreds gathered outside of the police precinct house in New Dorp.
This is the first public event held in support of the NYPD since Eric Garner died following his arrest when a police officer put him in a chokehold.
Those who attended the vigil say police have taken a lot of heat recently, but there is plenty of support for them in the community.
"Things happen and, you know, to try to denigrate an entire organization for the possible wrongdoing of one person is not right," said organizer Dennis McKeon.
"Every day you open the paper, you know. It's this constant bashing of the NYPD. 'They can't do their job, the handcuffs are on them,' and you know, so we just want to say 'hey, we love you guys,'" said organizer Scott LoBaido.
Organizers say they will continue to plan events in support of the NYPD and its fallen officers.
