Police say officers shot a man after he was seen assaulting a woman with a knife in the Bronx.

The incident happened just before 4 a.m. in Kingsbridge.

Officers say they were called to investigate an assault inside a building on Sedgwick Avenue.

Once inside, they say two plain-clothes cops found a 34-year-old man attacking a 32-year-old woman with a knife.

When he refused an order to drop it, the officers each fired once—hitting the man in the torso.

He was transported to Saint Barnabus Hospital, where he remains in critical condition and in police custody.

The suspect has not yet been charged.
