State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has launched a probe into former Brooklyn district attorney Charles Hynes for allegedly misusing public funds.

The Daily News reports that Schneiderman has called a grand jury in Brooklyn Supreme Court to look into bringing criminal theft charges against Hynes.

A spokesman for Schneiderman declined to comment.

The city's Department of Investigation released a 27-page report earlier this month showing Hynes used more than $200,000 seized from criminal raids to pay for a political consultant working on his re-election campaign.

Hynes was defeated by Kenneth Thompson, who took office in January.

Reports say federal involvement could mean felony charges for the former prosecutor.

The Department of Investigation also alleges Barry Kamins -- who is the administrative judge for the city's criminal courts -- may have violated ethics rules by advising Hynes on the campaign.

Kamins has been removed from his post. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
