Fire marshals are trying to determine what sparked a blaze at a high-rise in Manhattan on Sunday.

Eight people, including a firefighter were hurt in the smoky blaze at Independence Plaza North located at 310 Greenwich Street in TriBeCa.

The fire started around 8:40 p.m. on the fifth floor of the high-rise.

Officials say it was under control by 10:30 p.m.

Fire officials and residents tell NY1 the smoke billowed throughout the 39-story building.

"We smelled smoke, saw some firefighters and were all told to evacuate the building," said one building resident.

"There was a lot of smoke so people thought the fire was in two places but it was actually just on the fifth floor," said another building resident.

Officials say five people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Three others refused medical attention. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
