Police are investigating a possible hate crime on Roosevelt Island.
Investigators say the victim was walking with his mother Thursday when a group of teens began harassing them.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, and his mother wear turbans and follow the Sikh religion.
He tells the Sikh Coalition that the teens kept calling him "Osama bin Laden."
Police say the man was punched in the face and in the back of the neck, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The man released a statement saying in part quote: "My mom is visiting me from India. She thought that Americans respect religious freedom and that the police and the government here do everything in their power to prevent violence and arrest criminals. I don’t want her to lose faith that justice will be done."
This is the second alleged hate crime in the Sikh community in recent days.
