Two Metropolitan Transportation Authority Bridge and Tunnel officers were injured Tuesday after racing in to rescue residents inside a burning apartment building in Queens.
Officials say it happened just before 6:30 a.m. at 10-39 51st Avenue in Long Island City.
The agency says MTA Sergeant Jacinth Thomas and Officer Ron Linck were patrolling the nearby Queens-Midtown tunnel when they saw flames.
They helped evacuate over a dozen people.
"Once we saw the fire, we immediately had to respond, somebody might be in trouble," said MTA Bridges and Tunnels Sergeant Jacinth Thomas.
"It's just a natural reaction, just like any other police officer. We just run in there and try to help people," said MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officer Ron Linck.
The two officers were treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
The FDNY says five firefighters were also hurt.
