A 10-year-old girl from Staten Island is dead after being pulled from the water off Coney Island.
Police say they were called to the beach at Stillwell Avenue around 7 p.m. Tuesday.
They found 10 year-old Takara McDuffy and her 9 year-old sister, who bystanders had pulled out of the water.
Lifeguards were off-duty at the time.
Neighbors in Park Hill say the little girl's death will make them watch their kids a little closer.
"They're always outside playing with the kids so it's just heartbreaking that something happened to little kids like that,” said one neighbor.
“To be honest with you I'm going to hold my daughter so tight because you know one minute you can be here and the next minute you can't and I'm just going to let her know that, you know, because she loves to go and play and go deeper in the water, but I'm going to let her know stuff like this can happen,” said another neighbor.
Police say Good Samaritans gave the girls CPR until an ambulance arrived.
The girls were taken to the hospital, where Takara was pronounced dead.
The NYPD says her sister was not hurt.
They say adult family friends were watching the children at the time.
