The Texas woman who sent ricin-laced letters to President Barack Obama and former mayor Michael Bloomberg was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison.

That's the maximum time allowed under a plea deal 36-year-old Shannon Richardson agreed to in December.

Richardson was arrested in June 2013, two weeks after investigators say she mailed the letters and then went to the police and tried to blame it on her estranged husband.

Authorities say the letters contained violent threats against gun control advocates.
