Nearly 23 million private records of New Yorkers were exposed in data security breaches over the past eight years, according to a new report by State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The report says hackers were responsible for 40 percent of the incidents.
The rest are being blamed on lost or stolen equipment, inside wrongdoing and mistakes.
Nine-hundred breaches were reported in 2013, with more than seven million records exposed.
Schneiderman is urging businesses to take more precautions with data.
