An NYPD detective who was assaulted in the subway was awakened Sunday morning from a medically induced coma as police still search for his attacker.

Authorities say the 29-year-old officer was off duty when he was punched in the head on the subway platform of the southbound 6 train at East 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue.

The officer, a six-year veteran, fell and struck his head on the platform. He was taken to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain and placed into a medically-induced coma.

Police are seeking a dark-skinned male, about 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds, in connection with the attack. The suspect was with two women at the time of the incident.

Southbound 6 trains were bypassing the 23rd Street station while police conducted an investigation.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
