Six lifeguards have been charged for allegedly smoking marijuana during their lunch break on the Fourth of July.
Investigators say the group was huddled inside a car near Rockaway Beach during a thunderstorm last Friday.
Police searched the vehicle and say they found two bags of marijuana, two joints and drug paraphernalia in the console.
All of them were arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Two lifeguards have resigned, the others were not on duty at the time.
A parks department spokesperson says the incident is under investigation.
In a statement the department said, "NYC Parks employs some 1500 lifeguards who work hard each day to keep the thousands of people who swim at our beaches and pools safe. That is a serious responsibility for which lifeguards are required to be fit for duty at all times."
