The medical examiner's office says smoke inhalation and thermal burns led to the death of a New York City Fire Department lieutenant in Brooklyn over the weekend.
Gordon "Matt" Ambelas, a 14-year veteran, died while searching for people in a burning 19th-floor apartment in Independence Towers in Williamsburg.
Ambelas' wake will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Casey McCallum Rice Funeral home on Staten Island.
His funeral will be at St. Clare's Church on Staten Island at 11 p.m. Thursday.
Fire marshals say the flames that killed Ambelas were caused by an air conditioner cord that was pinched between the bed frame and the wall.
The fire department says the room was heavily cluttered, which made searches extremely difficult and dangerous for responding firefighters.
A fund has been set up to help Ambelas' family.
