The city fire department is investigating an early morning apartment fire in Manhattan.

The flames broke out on the ninth floor of a building located at 443 West 25th Street in Chelsea shortly after 2 a.m.

It's not clear what sparked the fire, but reports say gasoline inside the apartment may be to blame.

More than one person in the building said they heard explosions.

"Late last night I came downstairs people said there were was an explosion in the apartment," said one tenant. "The whole block was full of fire trucks and Con Edison men."

"That was a real fire that burnt the whole place down, the whole apartment," said another tenant.
