Mayor Bill de Blasio hosted the weigh-in for the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest Thursday.
He said he was excited to be part of the event and looks forward to Brooklyn taking the national spotlight on Friday.
"More than a million fans will be watching on ESPN, so the eyes of the nation will be on Coney Island," de Blasio said. "And this is an extraordinary event, and it's very, very competitive. It's highly competitive. People train all year. Some might say it's so competitive, it's a dog-eat-dog atmosphere."
Last year, seven-time world hot dog eating champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut and Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas ate their way to victory.
This is the contest's 42nd year.
