Brooklyn-born writer, actor, and director Paul Mazursky has died.

He was best known for his films satirizing American culture in the 1960s and 70s.

The comedy, "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice" received four Academy Award nominations.
Other films included "Harry and Tonto," and "Down And Out in Beverly Hills."

Mazursky got his start acting and writing, and co-wrote the pilot for the Monkees television series.

The show ran from 1966 to 1968, winning two Emmys.

Mazursky died Monday in Los Angeles of pulmonary cardiac arrest.
