Pride continues to be celebrated throughout the city, as the annual LGBT reception was held Thursday evening at Gracie Mansion.
Actress and Bill de Blasio supporter Cynthia Nixon introduced the mayor and applauded his support of the LGBT community.
The mayor and his wife, Chirlane McCray, said there is still more work to do for LGBT equality and that New York should be leading the way.
"We have to show how it's done. We have to lead the way. We have to paint the picture. Our victories will become infectious and energizing. We will create a positive inevitability by what we do," de Blasio said. "Our family celebrates pride because it is part of being a New Yorker, embracing all of us to celebrate pride. It is quintessentially New York to celebrate pride."
Pride activities continue throughout the weekend. The city's pride parade is this Sunday.
