A search is under way for a man who disappeared while swimming in the East River this morning.
Police say the 21-year-old was swimming off a pier in Williamsburg.
His friends say the current swept him away a little before 6 a.m.
"I saw them laughing. They must have been swimming out. They were jumping around, diving. They were having some fun. I went off to the store and when I came back they had basically just swam back to shore and they were calling out for the NYPD boats attention. They lost track of their friend," said one witness.
New York City Police Department boats and a helicopter are aiding in the search.
