While they're on summer vacation, a best-selling author has pledged to donate a book to every sixth grader in the city's public schools.
James Patterson says he'll give away close to 45,000 copies of his novel "Middle School: The Worst Years of My life."
He says giving students reading materials outside of the classroom provides a boost to their education.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña says that summer and free time reading is crucial to long-term learning.
The books will be distributed in more than 300 schools before the end of the academic year.
Patterson also recently donated 28,000 copies of his books to schools in Chicago.
