The power is back on for more than one thousand Con Ed customers in Queens following two manhole fires early Thursday morning.

The fire department says flames broke out around 6 a.m. near 95th Avenue and 96th Street in Ozone Park.

Con Ed says about 1,100 customers lost power in the area.

Residents who spoke with NY1 describes a chaotic scene.

"There was black smoke spewing out of the manhole, the manhole cover was rattling and it just blew off. It ignited the telephone wires, there was fire. Next thing I know the fire department is here they evacuated some of the homes," said Michael Hudson, a neighborhood resident.

The utility says power was restored about two hours later.
