With insurgent violence escalating in Iraq, Mayor de Blasio says the city remains on constant watch for any terror threats.

Militants with the group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have already captured two major Iraqi cities and are threatening to invade the capital of Baghdad.

U.S. officials confirm the group's leader said "I'll see you guys in New York" upon his release from American custody in 2009.

The mayor says says he is aware of the comment, and that city authorities are prepared accordingly.

"I've said many times, we know we are sadly the number one terror target in the world. That continues, that will continue for quite a while. We plan with that assumption in mind, we resource the NYPD with that assumption in mind, and we are constantly vigilant, because we know that reality," De Blasio said.

NY1 spoke with some New Yorkers who say the news from Iraq has not put them on edge.

"I haven't been thinking any different than usual, I'm just going to work, and I don't feel frightened," said one city dweller.

"You're taking a risk in any big city wherever you live, is it going to be a target. I just try to do day to day what I gotta do, try not to think about it as much," said another New Yorker.

Mayor de Blasio says he has been in contact with federal authorities regarding security but there have been no specific terror threats made against the city recently. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
