The U.S. got off on the right foot in the World Cup Monday, scoring early and late to beat Ghana and giving fans the vindication they'd wanted for eight years. NY1’s Jon Weinstein filed the following report.

It feels like every four years the city becomes a soccer town. While New York is known for having fans from everywhere, there's really only one home team.

"We're USA, and we're here to win baby," said one fan.

At Kinsale Tavern on the Upper East Side, fans watched the U.S. team face its nemesis, Ghana. The African nation knocked the Americans out of the last two World Cups.

“We're coming back for vengeance. I think the national team really feels all the pride and the hopes and dreams on their back,” said one fan.

“We're coming for revenge. They may be the more talented team this year, but we've got eight years of brooding over our losses. We're going to take it this time," said another.

At the start, it looked like they'd get exactly what they wanted. A first-minute goal from captain Clint Dempsey set the U.S. up.

Even though fans were on edge after Ghana evened the score, a dramatic late-game goal by substitute John Brooks sent them into a frenzy.

“He was substituted in, so that was amazing. He didn't have the flow. He wasn't playing with them for 90 minutes. He was playing with them for 20 minutes and he scored, and he was there, and now we won,” one fan said.

The road ahead isn't easy, with Germany and Portugal still to play in the group stage. However, fans said this win gives them hope that this year could be special.

:Tenacity, man. I think, now, this shows they're going to get out of the group,: said one fan.

The Americans' next game will be on Sunday against Portugal, which sports one of the biggest stars in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. However, after this win, the fans said that just doesn't matter. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
