A State Appeals Court this week ruled in favor of the so-called "Taxi of Tomorrow."
The four-judge panel ruled the Taxi and Limousine Commission can require all taxi owners to purchase the specially designed Nissan minivans.
The judges say it's in the interest of creating a modern, standardized taxi fleet.
The decision overturned a lower court ruling which said the TLC overstepped its authority.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade says the drivers want to be able to choose what kind of cabs they can buy.
"We want to see the Nissan 'Taxi of Tomorrow' be as a competitive vehicle that sort of wins us over on its own merit, so to speak, not because we're forced to buy it," said
The TLC says it's satisfied, but prepared for an appeal.
The Greater New York Taxi Association, which brought the original suit, has not yet commented.
