A woman is dead and a man is in custody after a car hopped a curb on Staten Island Monday afternoon.
Police say the 23-year-old driver was heading south on Hylan Boulevard shortly before 1:45 p.m. when his car jumped the curb and hit two people on the sidewalk.
Christal Aliotta, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Aliotta's father says her 20-year-old cousin sustained minor injuries.
He says he doesn't believe it was a deliberate act, and it truly was an unfortunate accident.
But some who live in the area say they aren't surprised it happened.
Some who live in the area said they aren't surprised something like this happened, though.
"Cars speed by this neighborhood all the time way too fast, and they just remodeled the streets and shortened the sidewalks to put in poles, and they really should have put the barriers because these cars come around the corners at very fast speeds," said one witness.
Police say the driver was arrested at the scene and searched.
They say police found two small packets of heroin in his pocket. A hypodermic needle and spoon were found upon further search.
Sources say if a drug test shows the driver is positive for any narcotics, he will be re-arrested on different charges.
