A fire in Brooklyn left a woman dead and a man in critical condition Monday.
Firefighters were called to the Unity Plaza Houses in East New York just after 3 a.m.
While knocking down the flames, police say firefighters found a 52-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man injured inside a second-story apartment.
They were rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.
"But it was heavy fire on arrival and an extremely high heat situation," said FDNY Captain Daniel Florenco.
"There was smoke all over the place and pretty much, it was mayhem—it was mayhem. My heart went out to those families that were displaced this morning. It was too close to home— too close," said one woman in the area.
Police have not released the victim's identities.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
