A child is in critical condition after being hit by a car in Brooklyn Thursday evening.

Police say the 11-year-old boy was crossing the street at Albemarle Road and East 28th Street in East Flatbush around 5:30 p.m. when a car struck him.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital.

Police say the driver stayed on the scene and is not expected to face any charges.

NY1 spoke to witnesses who said the may have been coming from a nearby schoolyard.

They said teachers came out to help the boy before emergency responders arrived.

"He's a good kid. He plays basketball. Hopefully, he'll be able to continue whatever career he wants to pursue," said Quasie Reed, who knows the victim. "He's a quiet kid. He minds his business. It's bad. It's tragic."

Neighbors said they think the street needs a speed bump or signs to warn drivers to slow down. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
