An initiative to bring Dominican-American citizens to the polls is underway.
The voter registration group Dominicanos USA gathered in Washington Heights to celebrate the more than two thousand new voters it says have registered and to encourage others to sign up.
The head of the organization's New York office says it's time Dominican-American voices are heard in elections.
"Traditionally the Dominican-American has been a sleeping giant of sorts, especially over the last 25 years, in that eligible voters and the consequential impact that those voters could have has never been fully realized," said Dominicanos USA's Manny Matos.
The organization currently has offices in New York and Rhode Island, but says it hopes to expand to other states with large Dominican populations like New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
