Authorities arrested 71 people in the New York area for allegedly sharing child porn over the Internet.

Federal authorities say the arrests are part of a five week long investigation into a peer-to-peer file sharing network.

They say most of the arrests are of people in the five boroughs or Long Island.

Federal officials describe the operation, which they say was a cooperative effort by investigators across the city and state and resulted in the seizure of thousands of pornographic images of children.

"HSI special agents purported to be users seeking pornographic images of children and searched for other network users who possessed such known images and had made these images available through the peer-to-peer network,” said Homeland Security Special Agent Jim Hayes.

A police officer and a Brooklyn rabbi were among the first arrested, and led to the development of this sting operation. Others arrested include a paramedic and a Boy Scout leader.

The lone woman arrested created content with her own child.

Agents are still examining devices for more evidence, which could result in more arrests.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will also review the images to see if it can identify any of the victims.

Those arrested will be charged with promoting and possessing child pornography.
