The voice of horse racing in New York State is putting down the mic.
Tom Durkin began his career calling horse meets at county fairs in Wisconsin in the summer of 1971.
The 63-year-old spent the last 24 years of his career working for the New York Racing Association.
He said it has been more than just a job for him.
"Well, racing occupies a very large part of my soul," Durkin said. "You know, I've been up to this point Tom Durkin, comma, race caller, and that's going to change on August 31. So racing is my identity, and it's not going to be after August 31. I don't know what I'm going to be."
Durkin has announced at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.
He will call his last race at Saratoga on August 31.
