Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday the start of construction on the new Goethals Bridge.
The $1.5 billion project will result in a new span between Staten Island and New Jersey.
Initial service is expected to begin in late 2016, with most construction completed by 2017.
The whole project will last about four years, during which the current Goethals Bridge will remain open.
The new bridge will have more, wider lanes, renewed pedestrian access, and the possibility of expanded mass transit options in the future.
Officials say it will also have new road condition-monitoring technology and will improve efficiency at the New York Container terminal.
The structure is expected to carry traffic for 100 years.
