A woman was struck and killed by a subway train in Manhattan Saturday afternoon.
It happened at the Astor Place station in the East Village shortly after 4 p.m.
Police believe the 55-year-old woman was leaning over the platform's edge and was hit by an uptown 6 train as it entered the station.
She was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center and later pronounced dead.
"I don't understand how it could happen, actually," said one subway rider. "If people stay back far enough, it shouldn't happen."
"That just shows how we need to be a little bit more careful," said another.
Service on the 6 line returned to normal about an hour and a half after the incident.
