Nine people were seriously hurt Friday morning when an SUV slammed into a wall on the New England Thruway in the Bronx.
The accident happened around 5:15 a.m. on the northbound side near the Conner Street exit ramp in Eastchester.
All nine people were taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
One is said to be in critical condition, including the driver.
The other victims are said to be in stable condition.
Hospital officials say the victims range in age from 24 to 36 years old.
"The accident was big, everyone was scared after watching their face, in the SUV they were totally burned on their face," said one gas station attendant who witnessed the crash.
"This corner there is a lot of traffic coming to the ramp and they wanted to make a left, but they come on the right side and make an illegal turn at all times, you can see that all day long," said one area resident.
Surveillance video shows the SUV just prior to the accident with the driver slamming on the breaks right before it disappears behind a bus.
Police Commissioner William Bratton says excessive speed was likely the cause.
